A joy-filled, colorful store, the Chinatown Kite Shop opened in 1972, when current owner 88-year old Albert Chang helped his father start the small business. Albert eventually took over the shop when his father retired 15 years ago.
As part of the merch co-design process, we connected designer Dan Mok with Albert at the shop to see all the beautiful kites. Albert envisioned a simple, bright design that captures the spirit of kite flying in San Francisco. We especially wanted to highlight the traditional Chinese bamboo kites that come in stunning colors and creatures such as goldfish, butterflies, phoenix, and dragons.
