A joy-filled, colorful store, the Chinatown Kite Shop opened in 1972, when current owner 88-year old Albert Chang helped his father start the small business. Albert eventually took over the shop when his father retired 15 years ago.
As part of the merch co-design process, we connected designer Dan Mok with Albert at the shop to see all the beautiful kites. Albert envisioned a simple, bright design that captures the spirit of kite flying in San Francisco. We especially wanted to highlight the traditional Chinese bamboo kites that come in stunning colors and creatures such as goldfish, butterflies, phoenix, and dragons.

Daniel Mok is an Illustrator and graphic designer working in the bay area since 2014 after he graduated from California College of the Arts. He enjoys creating visual stories filled with whimsicality, humor, characters, and an unbridled sense of adventure.
